Who's who

The Office of the Advocate General, Haryana, established in the year 1966, with the formation of the State of Haryana on 01.11.1966, is a constitutional post created under the aegis of Article 165 of the Constitution of India. Article 165(2) states that it shall be the duty of the Advocate General to give advice to the Government of the State upon such legal matters, and to perform such other duties of a legal character, as may from time to time be referred or assigned to him by the Governor, and to discharge the functions conferred on him by or under the Constitution or any other law for the time being in force. Keeping in mind that the relationship between the Office of the Advocate General and the State Government is that of an advocate and a client [Joginder Singh Wasu v State of Punjab (1994) 1 SCC 184)], the Advocate-General is mandated to give advice to the Government of a State and perform such other duties of a legal character as may be assigned to him by the Governor and has to discharge other functions conferred on him by the provisions of the Constitution, or any other law in force. “Therefore, if the State Government assigns to the Advocate-General the work of appearing in any legal proceedings in which it is interested, that would be the assignment to perform a duty of a legal character within the meaning of Article 165(2) and in assigning such duties, the State Government would be acting within its jurisdiction; and in accepting the assignment, the Advocate-General will be discharging his duties imposed by the said provision.” That being so, the Office of Advocate General, Haryana has a constitutional responsibility in ensuring that the constitutional emphasis on Fundamental Rights and Fundamental Duties remain the vanguard on which the Office operates. The Office to fulfill its mandate has a team of highly motivated law officers who work as a collective unit and are devoted to serving the directives of the office as bestowed upon them via the Constitution of India. The law officers continuously strive towards quick and substantive redressal by ensuring a cooperative sharing of expertise between the Office and the State Government. For ensuring the goal of protecting the rights and liberties and respecting the dignity of every person, the office of Advocate General, Haryana continuously strives towards providing a system that is convenient, understandable, and accessible.
